Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of salinity levels of soils and different wastewaters sources used for irrigation on heavy metals unbiogenetic (Cd, Co, Pb and Ni) content and availability in the soil with bioaccumulation and translocation factors of heave metals at different parts of grown maize (Zea mase L.) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) plants. Surface soil samples (0-30 cm) were collected from four different sites contaminated with heavy metals due to different anthropogenic activities. These sites were: El-Gabal El-Asfar (sewage water), Arab Abu-Saed (sewage and industrial wastewaters), Bahr Al-Baqar (mixed water from agricultural drainage water and sewage water and Sahl-El-Tina (El-Salam canal, mixed water from agricultural drainage+fresh water as a ratio of 1:1). Four irrigation water samples were collected from the canals used in irrigating the sites from which the soil samples were taken. Maize plants were kindly sampled from the aforementioned sites. The data obtained showed that maize plants irrigated with wastewater have heavy metals content due to different anthropogenic activities and grown in soil at different levels of salinity can take up heavy metals by their roots, or even via their stems and leaves, and accumulate them in their organs. This study concluded that maize can selectively take up elements. Accumulation and distribution of heavy metals in maize and cabbage depends on the component parts, metal type, bio-availability of metal, pH and quality level of water used in irrigation, soil salinity, and secretion of roots. Also, bioaccumulation (BF) and Translocation factors (TF) were still lower than 1 for all maize and cabbage parts under study indicating that there has been no contamination to all maize plant parts
