Abstract Poor academic achievement in school is the result of an interplay between child factors and the environmental factors, Studies have shown that the effects of poor academic achievement during the early school years often carry over to the adolescent years, with a higher proportion of school dropouts, behavioral problems and even delinquency among this population. It is important not only to identify children who are coping poorly in the early years of school, but also to look at factors that have an impact on school achievement (Ong L C, et al 2010). A cross sectional study was carried out in New Damietta city in 7 governmental primary schools, the third grade was the target of our study multi stage sampling technique was used then cluster sampling was done for each school according to the proportional allocation. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of poor academic achievement among the primary school children , identify the socio demographic factors associated with poor academic achievement during early school years and to detect the relation between I Q of the children and their academic achievement after exclusion of I Q <70 % as a step to improve the academic achievement of the primary school children. |
