Abstract

This study is conducted to evaluate the influence of adding different antibiotics to conventional glass ionomer restorative cement, on its antibacterial activity, water sorption and solubility, fluoride-releasing ability, compressive strength, surface roughness and its microhardness and it is concluded that incorporation of 2 wt% of antibiotics (including ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin/Clavulanate) into glass ionomer cement appears to provide an acceptable combination of properties, including enhancement of antibacterial activity of GIC and fluoride release especially during the initial fluoride burst period, that represent the most important properties of it. Although this incorporation may affect its mechanical properties, but that effect wasn’t statistically significant in comparison with the control group. These results should not overshadow the strong antibacterial efficacy results obtained, also incorporation of ciprofloxacin or combination of the two antibiotics into GIC maximizes its antibacterial effect and show greater fluoride release than conventional GIC especially during the initial fluoride burst period, that will induce remineralization of uninfected dentin and demineralized enamel. But it leads to decrease the mechanical properties of the cement, so it can be used as a base or a liner to induce remineralization after caries excavation.
