Abstract

The prevalence of obesity is increasing all over the world and this trend also affects women of reproductive age.The reported prevalence for obesity among women of reproductive age in the United States is 32% and prevalence for combined overweight and obesity is reported to be 58%.Obesity is dramatically growing in Eastern Mediterranean Region including Egypt in which the prevalence of overweight and obesity ranges from 74% to 86% among females and 69% to 77% among males. Maternal obesity is now the commonest risk factor for maternal mortality in developed countries and is also associated with a wide spectrum of adverse pregnancy outcomesThere are few studies evaluating neonatal outcome in relation to maternal obesity. Thus, the present study was designed to evaluate impact of maternal obesity on maternal and neonatal outcome. This study was cohort study include 104 pregnant ladies got by systematic random sampling technique from antenatal clinic in Zagazig University Hospital. Their socio demographic characteristics were got by aquestionnaire, they underwent complete medical and obstetric history, followed up through 3rd trimester up to labor and their babies were examined after labor.
Our result revealed that there was high prevalence of obesity among pregnant women; obese women represent 50 % of the studied group. Women aged ≥ 30 years old tend to be obese (66.7 %). However there was no statistically significant association between obesity and socioeconomic level. Multipara has 6 times risk of obesity. Obese women had 8 times risk having pregnancy complications than non-obese; they had 3 times risk to have miscarriage than non-obese. Obese women tend to have gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes and also had 4 times risk to have cesarean delivery than non-obese women.
