Abstract

The research aims at analysing twenty-two selected cartoons that were published in the wake of the charlie Hebdo attacks in 2015 and 2020. These cartoons were published as a response to the attacks and they constructed the identity of the attackers as well as showed the cartoonists’ perspectives and ideologies, so the study sought to analyse them to reveal the embedded messages within these seemingly-innocent cartoons. The framework used in the study is an eclectic one that uses both Kress and van Leeuwen’s 2004 framework as well as Machin and Mayr’s 2012 framework. The study started by giving a brief background of Paris attacks which occurred in 2015 and 2020 and spotlighted the different reactions to them. Then, the study highlighted the definition of caricatures and that they are going to be used with cartoons interchangeably throughout this study. It also drew attention to the importance of cartoons and how they can be used as effective weapons.
Chapter two demonstrated the theoretical and analytical frameworks this study worked within. It started by exploring the main theoretical notions and abstract concepts that shape the research. . It also covered the data selection, methodology, and procedure of the analysis; with the aim of illustrating the path the analysis will follow and the approaches and tools utilized by the researcher to achieve the objectives of the study.
Chapter three gave a review of some of the previous studies published in relation to the topic. The chapter traced a multitude of significant studies that employed MCDA as a tool for analysing verbal and visual affordances. Then, it highlighted the gap in previous studies and showed the suitability of the selected models for the phenomenon under investigation.
Chapter four was concerned with the analysis of the selected cartoons. The analysis was divided into two parts; the first one examined the selected cartoons by employing Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Grammar of Visual Design, and the second part applied Machin and Mayr’s (2012) MCDA toolkit to examine both visuals and linguistic items. This chapter aimed at unpacking the ideologies and underlining the significance of representations induced within both verbal and visual modes in the selected data through utilizing multimodal discourse.
Finally, this study aimed at distinguishing the effect of ideological implications of cartoons and it managed to draw attention to how the cartoonists present charlie Hebdo cartoonists’ as innocent people doing their job and practising their right of freedom of speech while camouflaging how their cartoons might be encouraging hate speech.
