Abstract

This experimental work was carried out at laboratory of breeding and production of fish, Animal and Fish Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture (Saba.Bacha), Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt.
To date, very few studies, dealing with morphometric character, and genetic differentiation of shrimp species. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to analyze the phenotype based on morphometric character indices, and meristic counts, and genotype analysis using DNA fingerprint based on microsatellites (simple sequence repeats, SSRs) fingerprinting among seven species of shrimp (Metapenaeus monoceros, Penaeus vannamei, Penaeus japonicas, Penaeus semesulacatus, Penaeus penicillatus, Penaeus monodon, Penaeus kerathurus).
The results were summarized and discussed in the following points:
Mean values of morphometric indices and meristic counts were compared among different shrimp species. The highest means indices of BL/TL was recorded by Penaeus vannamei but did not differ significantly from those of Metapenaeus monoceros monoceros, Penaeus japonicas, Penaeus semesulacatus, Penaeus penicillatus, and Penaeus kerathurus. While, the mean indices of AL/TL showed significant inferiority for Metapenaeus monoceros monoceros compared to other species under study.
