Abstract

hyperinflation on arterial blood gases and functional outcomes in children after cardiac surgery. This study conducted on thirty children of both sexes after open heart surgery, their ages ranged from 6 months to 3 years. They were selected from Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Academic Institute for Heart Surgery, Ain shams university. It was conducted from April 2020 to January 2021. The children’s arterial oxygenation was assessed by arterial blood gas analyzer. The children were classified randomly into two groups of equal number. group A (control group) received traditional physiotherapy, while group B (study group) received the same traditional physiotherapy, in addition to manual hyperinflation technique. The result of this study revealed significant improvement in percentage of PaO2, decreased PaCO2, improving functional outcomes and decreased PICU length of stay and ventilation period when comparing post treatment results of the two groups in favor of the study group. from the obtained results of this study it can be concluded that using manual hyperinflation in addition to traditional physiotherapy program have significant effect in improving arterial blood gases and functional outcomes, accelerate ventilator weaning and decrease PICU length of stay in children after open heart surgery.
