Abstract

Hepatitis C virus infection represents a potential public health problem worldwide, about 3% of the world’s population have antibodies for HCV and more than 170 million have chronic infection with risk of developing liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Many studies have shown markedly higher prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection compared to healthy subjects. Insulin resistance and T2DM have several consequences on HCV infection outcomes such as enhanced progression of liver fibrosis, resistance to antiviral therapy and development of hepatocellular carcinoma.Fetuin-A is one of the principal hepatokines regulating the human metabolism. It was recognized as a natural inhibitor of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase in liver and skeletal muscle. Consistent with that, single nucleotide polymorphisms in the human Fetuin-A gene were found to be associated with T2DM. Additionally, several reports have shown that higher serum Fetuin-A levels are associated with IR, and T2DM.This study aimed to estimate the level of Fetuin-A in HCV patients with concomitant T2DM,
