Abstract

There are now many unilateral cochlear implants users who have residual hearing in the non implanted ear. Unilateral CI listeners face many challenges as speech perception especially in background of noise and sound localization. Children with bilateral hearing loss need bilateral stimulation to develop the neural pathway required for central processing of binaural hearing. A hearing aid can be used in their contralateral ear with residual hearing so, the CI stimulates one ear with electrical signals and the HA sends the amplified acoustical signals to the contralateral ear. The combination of these two types of signals is called bimodal fitting.
