Abstract

As a result of our study, early seizures are a common and very important complication of cerebrovascular strokes. Focal to bilateral tonic-clonic and focal aware seizures were the most prevalent type of early onset seizures after stroke, followed by generalized tonic-clonic seizures and status epilepticus. Most EEG findings in this study were focal slowing, focal epileptiform activities, generalized epileptiform activities and PLEDS. Age, gender, DM, HTN, carotid stenosis, NIHSS on admission, family history of epilepsy and past history of febrile seizures didn’t have a significant association with early seizures. Early seizures did not seem to affect the functional outcome at hospital discharge after acute strokes. There is a strong relationship between NIHSS score on admission and functional outcome at discharge. Also, there is no relationship between EEG findings and the type, site and size of the stroke.
Among the diagnostic capabilities, EEG is the optimal diagnostic tool in seizures that can reveal early changes in electrical brain activity after cerebral ischemic or hemorrhagic injuries, for assessing the functional state of the brain, providing for the diagnosis of non-convulsive epileptic seizures and prognostication of disease outcome.
