Abstract

Pre-eclampsia is a life-threatening condition of pregnancy, especially in developing countries where it has many adverse effects on the maternal and fetal outcomes of pregnancy. It is generally defined as new-onset hypertension greater than 140/90 mm Hg and substantial proteinuria greater than or equal to 300 mg in 24 h or other maternal organ dysfunction at or after 20 weeks of gestation or post-partum.Pre-eclampsia self-care practices sessions are an effective strategy for enriching the affected women with information about pre-eclampsia and its self-care practices to empower them to participate more actively in the activities that enhance health and well-being that have a great effect on pre-eclampsia management as well as on improving pregnancy and labor outcomes for both mothers and their babies. Aim of the study: The present study aims to investigate the effect of self-care practices sessions for pre-eclamptic women on pregnancy outcomes. Subjects and Method: The study was conducted at the Antenatal Outpatient Clinics in the New Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Mansoura, Egypt, and at the labor and delivery unit and the inpatient obstetrics and gynecology departments at Mansoura University Hospital, Mansoura, Egypt. The study subjects included 96 pregnant women with pre-eclampsia who were chosen by purposive sample technique. Four tools for data collection were utilized: A Structured Interview Schedule, Pre-eclampsia Knowledge Questionnaire, Pre-eclampsia Self-Care Practices Questionnaire and Pregnancy and Labor Outcome Assessment Sheet. The main finding of the study: There were highly statistically significant improvements in the studied women’s total pre-eclampsia knowledge and self-care practices scores after attending the self-care practices sessions. The results also highlighted that there were statistically significant associations between the total self-care practices score post-intervention and the pregnancy, labor, fetal and neonatal outcomes.Recommendations: Pre-eclampsia self-care practices sessions should be an integral part of the routine antenatal care provided to the affected women to raise their awareness regarding effective pre-eclampsia self-care to improve pregnancy and labor outcomes.
