Abstract

This experimental work was carried out at laboratory of breeding and production of fish, Animal and Fish Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture (Saba-Basha), Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt.
This work was designed to compare the variances in phenotype depending on morphometric character indices and meristic counts amongst five different populations of African catfish in order to fill a vulnerability in the knowledge on African catfish C. gariepinus from Nile River waters (Egypt). The results were summarized in the following points: 1. The highest mean of body depth (BDA/SL) value index (0.147±0.001, 0.148± 0.001, and 0.150±0.001) were found in Rashid, Qena and Culture populations, and differ significantly (P ≤ 0.05) from those of the other. 2. The highest mean index value of body width index (BW/SL) was (0.120±0.001) recorded by Burullus population, and differ significantly (P ≤ 0.05) from those of the other. 3. The highest mean index value of Caudal peduncle length index (CPL/SL) was (0.161±0.002), and recorded by Damietta population, and differ significantly (P ≤0.05) from those of the other.
