Abstract

In this research, a numerical study of reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams was performed to find an optimum technique for enhancing the behavior of RC deep beams. Different parameters are changed for this purpose. These include concrete compressive strength, reinforcement ratio, section depth, and external fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets at different locations and with different types. The non-linear finite element program ANSYS is used in this study. The numerical results are compared to experimental results available in the literature. All beams are simply supported and subjected to a mid-span concentrated load. The control beam specimen has a span length of 1150 mm and a cross-section of 150 x 800 mm. The parametric study in this research includes an unstrengthened beam, a beam utilized by inclined stirrups in addition to two beams internally strengthened by a single strut and either vertical or horizontal additional reinforcement. The study also includes a beam strengthened using internal double embedded struts and a beam strengthened with external CFRP sheets. Results show that the parameters which are selected for the beams have a significant effect on increasing the load capacity of deep beams.
