The plants included in the family are characterized by being herbs annual, biennial, or short lived perennial herbs or small shrubs with sap usually milky or colorless. Leaves usually exstipulate, petiolate, blade dissected or lobed, mostly alternate or in a basal rosette, rarely opposite. The family is divided by Fedde (1936) based on differences on floral characters into three subfamilies; Papaveroideae, Fumarioideae and Hypecoideae. On the other hand Hutchinson (1934) accepted the segregation of the above subfamilies as two distinct families (Papaveraceae and Fumariaceae). Takhtajan (1969) proposed the division of the family into three families; Papaveraceae, Fumariaceae and Hypecoaceae. |
