Abstract

Pharmaceuticals residuals are regarded as emerging contaminants of concern due to their continuous release into the environment and persistence even at very low concentrations with potentials to cause adverse human health and environmental effects. Such manifestation imposes the need for removal of such hazardous pollutants. Our study provides a facile, cost effective technique for the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants including dyes and fluoroquinolones. Novel adsorbents, magnetite nanoparticles modified with pectin shell and silica / pectin double shell, were fabricated and tested for single dye and dye mixture adsorption from water samples. Cationic dyes; methylene blue and crystal violet and anionic dyes; methyl orange and eriochrome black T were employed to assess dye removal efficiency. A validated spectrophotometric method was developed for monitoring single dye adsorption process. For dye mixture adsorption, a new HPLC assay was proposed for quantitation of dyes in treated samples. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics were also studied to provide clear picture for the mechanism of adsorption. The efficiency of fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin and mMoxifloxacin) adsorption together with their photo degraded molecules on pectin modified nanoparticles was studied under varying physicochemical conditions
