Abstract

Objectives: The present study was conducted to evaluate the oxidant- antioxidant status of SCD patients and to study the impact of HCV sero- positivity on the oxidant-antioxidant status among SCD patients Methods: The serum levels of total antioxidant(TAO), paraoxonase (PON), catalase(CAT) and malondialdehyde(MDA) were estimated in 50 patients with established diagnosis of SCA in steady state disease (21 males and 29 females) and 30 apparently healthy subjects age & sex matched controls. Results: Mean serum MDA and CAT in SCD cases were significantly higher (P= 0.001; 0.01 respectively) while mean TAO, and PON1 levels were significantly lower among SCD cases compared to controls (p=0.001). No significant differences in mean levels of CAT, PON, TAO and MDA in SCD males when compared with SCD females (P{u02C3} 0.05). But we found that mean MDA in males was significantly lower than females (P=0.03). No significant differences in the mean levels of CAT, PON, TAO and MDA between HCV positive and HCV negative SCD patients (P{u02C3} 0.05). No significant differences in the mean levels of CAT, PON, TAO and MDA in SCD cases on hydroxyurea (HU) and those not receiving HU (P{u02C3} 0.05). No significant correlations were detected between CAT, PON, TAO, MDA and different patient variables (P{u02C3} 0.05).Conclusions: Oxidative stress is evident in SCD patients of both genders. HCV seropositivity or HCV-RNA positivity had no evidence of a more severe oxidative stress. Hydroxyurea did not play a significant role as an antioxidant among our patients
