Abstract

A phytochemical study of some traditional medicinal plants with expected activity against propionibacterium acnes was carried out. The methanolic extracts of twenty-five plants used in traditional medicine for treatment of various infections were tested for their antibacterial activities against propionibacterium acnes. Literature survey on Myrtus communis L. (plant that showed the highest antibacterial activity against propionibacterium acnes) was reviewed. Secondary metabolites of Myrtus communis L. leaves were analyzed using preliminary phytochemical screening which revealed the presence of volatile substances, carbohydrates and/or glycosides, flavonoids, tannins and sterol and/or triterpenes. Furthermore, bioactivity guided fractionation of the methanolic extract of Myrtus communis L. leaves was conducted to isolate the major constituents responsible for the antibacterial activity against propionibacterium acnes. Bioactivity-guided fractionation resulted in isolation and identification of seven known compounds namely, 5-acetoxy-4-hydroxy-4- isobutyl-2,2,6,6- tetramethylcyclo hexan-1,3- dione, Ý-sitosterol, isomyrtucommulone-B, endoperoxide-G3, gallic acid, myricetin-3-O-a-L-rhamnoside and myricetin-3-O-(63-glloyl)-Ý-galactoside. 5-acetoxy-4-hydroxy-4-isobutyl-2, 2, 6, 6- tetra-methylcyclohexan-1,3-dione, isomyrtucommulone-B, endoperoxide-G3 and myricetin-3-O-(63-glloyl)-Ý-galactoside are isolated here for the fist time from Myrtus communis L. cultivated in Egypt
