Abstract

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the nail apparatus with a high incidence of recurrence. It is responsible for up to 50% of the nail disorders, affecting 3-10% of population in Europe. It is more common in elderly people and its occurrence seems to be increasing due to a growing elderly population, a higher frequency of using immunosuppressant drugs, life-style factors, such as wearing tight-fitting shoes and the use of communal recreational facilities and health clubs, as well as improved detection and higher public awareness Treating a nail infection is being a challenge, as the human nail plate acts as a formidable barrier against drug permeation. Available oral and topical treatments have several drawbacks, including high frequency of dosing and systemic side effects. Thus, there is a need for the development of a suitable drug -iii- delivery system, which allows patients to use their medication in a convenient and effective manner without the drawbacks of the oral treatment
