Abstract

Background and aims the incidence of cardiovascular disease among patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) on regular hemodialysis was found to be 10-20 times higher than in the general population. Cardiovascular disease accounts for 50 % of all deaths in this population.Atherosclerosis is the most frequent cause of cardiovascular morbidity in patients with ESRD. Aim of study: 1-To detect the prevalence of vascular calcification among hemodialysis patients using different radiological scores. 2-To detect the association between mortality among hemodialysis patients and vascular calcification scores. Patients and Methods 92 patientson regular hemodialysisat Kasr Elaini hemodialysis unit and Kasr ElAini nephro-urology unit (king fahd unit) were only included 47 female, 45male.Included subjects were evaluated by: History taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations.vascular calcification was assessed by non contrast ct abdomen, lateral lumbar x ray and xray of both hand and pelvis. Results In our study we found high prevalence of vascular calcification among patients on regular hemodialysis using 6 different radiological scores. Two of these scores utilized plain radiography while 4 scores utilized CT of thoracic and abdominal aorta. We demonstrated a correlation between the different scores despite the use of various techniques, and measuring calcification in different vascular territories. {u2022}The prevalence of vascular calcification was significantly higher when measured by CT compared to plain X rays
