Abstract

Few data about teeth widths were found for Egyptian children. Thus, this study was conducted as a part of a project designed to collect data on the mesiodistal widths of the permanent mandibular incisors and maxillary and mandibular canines and premolars in a group of Egyptian children in Cairo governorate. Objectives: Determine the combined mesiodistal widths of the permanent mandibular incisors and that of the maxillary and mandibular canines and premolars in a group of Egyptian children in Cairo Governorate and to correlate between the widths of these teeth to formulate normative data for the Egyptian children. Methods: A sample of 200 Egyptian students, 100 boys and 100 girls, their ages ranged from 12 to 15 years were selected randomly from two schools in mokatam, Cairo governorate which were Gaber Elsabah preparatory governmental school for girls and Alshimaa preparatory governmental school for boys. Mesiodistal width of mandibular incisors and maxillary and mandibular canines and premolars were measured from the study models using digital caliper especially designed for dental use. The caliper was held at the tooth{u2019}s greatest mesio-distal diameter (contact points) and inserted from the buccal or labial parallel to the occlusal surface and perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth. The data were processed and analyzed. Results: The results of this study showed a statistically significant difference in the mean mesiodistal tooth width between boys and girls for all measured teeth except maxillary right lateral incisor. Positive significant correlation was found between the lower incisors and the upper and lower canine and premolars, also between left and right canine and premolars. Conclusion: from this study, a standard for the mesiodistal crown dimensions of permanent dentition of Egyptian males and females in Cairo governorate were obtained
