Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the transdentinal antibacterial activity of chlorhexidine, Nisin and Nisin combined with chlorhexidine solutions against Streptococcus mutans. Materials and methods: Forty human molars were sectioned to obtain 80 dentin discs 0.2 and 0.5mm thick (40 discs/thickness), permeability of the dentin discs was measured. Then, each dentin disc thickness group was divided into four subgroups either; distilled water (Control), chlorhexidine, Nisin or Nisin combined with chlorhexidine solution. Glass Petri dishes were used with the microbial suspension spread onto it. Eight discs were placed in each Petri dish and 50 microliters of each tested solution was pipetted on the occlusal side and the dishes were incubated in anaerobic conditions. Then, the diameters of the inhibition zones produced around the dentin discs were measured, and statistically analyzed. Results: Chlorhexidine and Nisin had antimicrobial activity higher than distilled water. The combined chlorhexidine and Nisin, showed antimicrobial activity lower than each agent individually applied. 0.2mm dentin discs revealed larger inhibition zone diameters rather than 0.5mm thick discs. Conclusion: Nisin has a promising potential to be used as cavity disinfectant
