Abstract

Background: Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study is to compare the predictive values of cervical length versus vaginal pH in the second trimester to predict preterm labor. Methods: A prospective cohort study on 500 pregnant women between 18-24weeks of gestation who were assessed regarding vaginal pH and cervical length. All patients were followed up until delivery and gestational age, mode of delivery and any complications were determined. Results:The incidence of preterm labor ({uF03C}37 weeks) was 55/500(11%).There is significant correlation between the history of preterm, history of abortion and preterm labor, with P values (0.001) and (0.006) respectively. For cervical length, P value ({uF03C}0.001), cut off value ({u2264}2.9 Cm), sensitivity (61.8%) and specificity (83.4%) were determined. For vaginal pH, cut off value ({u2265}4.5), sensitivity (65.5%) and specificity (47%) were determined. Conclusion:The history of preterm labor and of abortions are significant risk factors for preterm labor. The cervical length measurement has better predictive value for preterm labor than vaginal pH in the second trimester of pregnancy
