Abstract

Background: Obsessive compulsive disorder, is a significant neurobiological disorder that severely can disrupt academic, social, and vocational functioning. Once believed to be relatively rare in children and adolescents, Obsessive compulsive disorder now is thought to affect as many as 2-3% of children. Among children and adolescents with Obsessive compulsive disorder, the literature indicates that very few receive an appropriate and correct diagnosis, and even fewer receive proper treatment because Obsessive compulsive symptoms go unrecognized in children presenting with other psychiatric disorders. Objective: the aim of the present study was to: 1. Study the presence of obsessions and compulsions in children frequenting an outpatient clinic in Alexandria. 2. Detect the frequently presenting symptoms of the disorder among children. 3. Assess the severity rates of Obsessive compulsive disorder among children. Methods: a multistage cross sectional study was carried out at the outpatient clinic of Elmaamoura Psychiatry Hospital in Alexandria. This work was carried out on all children presenting (for the first time and follow up) in Elmaamoura child psychiatric clinic for 3 months{u2019} duration. The study population was the children aged from 6 to 12 years enrolled in the above-mentioned setting. The sample size was 107 children of 600 total sample. Participants: Participants were subjected to Structured interview using Psychometric testing, the Arabic form of the Diagnostic Interview Kiddie- Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia -Present and Lifetime Version -for School Age Children. Psychiatric assessment using Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders fourth edition text revised. And the Arabic form of Children{u2019}s Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale to detect obsessive compulsive symptoms and their severity
