Abstract

Closely spaced buildings should be separated by a minimum distance to prevent pounding due to the lateral and the longitudinal displacements during Earthquakes, as mentioned in International seismic design codes. The current research takes into consideration the Egyptian code rule for computation of seismic gap between adjacent buildings. To check the consistency of the results, several study cases of adjacent buildings with dissimilar heights and vibrations periods were considered. Moreover, several analysis methods were considered also. First, non-linear analysis was conducted, and the inelastic displacements were computed for the case study buildings. The obtained results were utilized to estimate the relation between elastic and inelastic displacements according to the resisting elements ductility. Then, for the minimum separation distance computation, various techniques were utilized and the obtained results were compared to the Egyptian code recommended equation. Last, to ensure that no pounding happened, a verification analysis was performed. Based on the cases and parameters considered in this study, the produced results clarified that the seismic gap might be overestimated in some cases according to the code specification, especially when adjacent buildings had close vibrations periods
