A Pharmacognostical study on Antigonon leptopus vine, family Polygonaceae was carried out. Literature survey was reviewed. Botanical study on the aerial parts was done, to identify the vine in both entire and powder form. Phytochemical study on the aerial parts revealed the isolation and identification of five compounds: Ý-sitosterol, quercetin, naringenin, quercetrin and chlorogenic acid, confirmed by their spectral data. GLC analysis of the lipid content of the aerial parts, HPLC analysis of the methanolic extract and its ethyl acetate fraction were also carried out. LC/MS analysis resulted in identification of 50 compounds from the methanolic extract, while GC-MS analysis of both the methylene chloride and n-butanol fractions of the methanolic extract revealed the presence of 35 and 37 compounds respectively. Fresh sample of the aerial parts exhibited a potential source of vitamin C , as well as, a good source for protein. Biological study showed weak antimicrobial activity, significant antioxidant, tumor cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant activities of the aerial parts of the vine. Finally, preliminary tissue culture study, with the formation of callus tissue from the leaf explants of A.leptopus revealed promising results. HPLC analysis showed higher concentrations of flavonoids, as compared to those of the plant field in different callus cultures, supplemented with different concentrations of the growth hormone regulator naphthalene acetic acid (NAA)
