Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pain relief in PRP intraarticular injections versus occlusal splinting for the treatment of TMJ OA. The study included twelve joints (i,e six patients) suffering from TMJ OA. Patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of the oral and maxillofacial department, Faculty of oral and dental medicine, Cairo University and diagnosed on clinical examination and a thorough medical and dental history. The selected subjects were divided into two equal groups: group I: including six joints, each joint underwent PRP Injection. group II: including six joints, each joint was treated by occlusal splinting. Baseline data were collected including pain relief in the TMJ muscles by VAS, increase MIO measurement, disappearance of TMJ sounds and decrease in TGF-Ý1 concentration count in the synovial fluid. Data were collected pre-operatively, one week, one month, three months and six months post-operatively. Analysis of the results from this study revealed that by the end of the six months interval, the measurements of both groups were greatly improved achieving high success rates. However, higher success rates were seen in group I when compared to group II
