Abstract

Raphanus sativus (radish) is an edible root vegetable of the Brassicaceae family, it is grown and consumed throughout the world. Two varieties of radish were used in this study (white and red radish). Aqueos methanolic extract of white radish roots (WRR), white radish leaves (WRL) and red radish roots (RRR) were identified by HPLC, the most abundant compound was catechin in RRR that recorded 0.852 g/100g followed by WRL (0.500 g/100g). Meanwhile Ferulic and sinapic were the main components in the two varieties. On the other hand, the aqueos extracts of WRR, WRL and RRR were used as hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic experiments by using albino rats. Rats were administrated orally by different concentrations (100, 200 and 400 ppm/kg b.w/day for each extract). Results show the effect of radish extracts on the glucose level of diabetic rats. The superior effect was with G12 (diabetic + 400 mg RRR/kg b.w/day). On the other hand, results of the influence of radish extracts as hypocholesterolemic action were in a positive way on the level of total cholesterol and reduced LDL and triglycerides levels and increased the level of glutathione peroxides, meanwhile it reduced the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in rats serum. G11 (HFD + 1% cholesterol + 400 mg RRR/kg b.w/day) recorded the best results as hypocholesterolemic effect which could be attributed to their phenolic content. Our results indicated that, radish extracts have good action as hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic. The phenolic extract of radish roots was used to extend the shelf life of pickled radish stored for 3 months
