Abstract

With the continual growth in the number of international students studying in Egyptian universities in recent years, it has become more important than ever to understand the requirements and needs of these students. Thus, their needs can be fulfilled in a manner that contributes to satisfy, retain and attract more them. So, this study was conducted in an attempt by the researcher to determine the most important needs of international students in terms of hospitality during their study in Egypt. To achieve the objectives of the study, two data collection tools were used, namely: (personal interview – online questionnaire).A personal interviews with officials from some public universities were conducted by the researcher to get acquainted with the reality of international students there. As well as the challenges that officials face in providing the hospitality needs which contribute to international students’ retention and satisfaction. The study also used an online questionnaire model to determine international students’ perceptions of the hospitality needs used in the study. Descriptive statistics were used to determine how the international students ranked the hospitality needs used in the study according to their importance for them. Also to reveal whether there were differences in the perceived importance of hospitality needs based on the demographic variables of the respondents. Through personal interviews that conducted by the researcher with officials from some public universities, it was found that the percentage of international students living in the university housing is very low compared to the total number of these students enrolled in the university. It was also discovered that there were some problems and hurdles that contributed to this.Based on the responses collected via the online questionnaire, we found that international students had high ratings of the perceived importance of hospitality needs used in the study. However, there were significant differences in respondents’ ratings of the perceived importance of hospitality needs based on their gender and geographical region of origin. In contrast, differences were not significant among international students on the basis of these demographic variables: marital status, age and current degree program. Finally, based on the results obtained through the field study, some recommendations have been proposed to officials in the ministries, concerned authorities and universities in order to provide the appropriate hospitality needs for international students and according to their perceptions. Thus increase the ability of universities and the Egyptian academic community to retain these students and to attract more of them. There were also some recommendations for further research and for future research in this regard.
