Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out to evaluate the bleeding on brushing among a group
of Egyptian children after using Azadirachta Indica (Neem extract) mouthwash versus
Chlorhexidine mouthwash.
Participants and Method: Ninety six healthy children aged from 8-10 years old were
selected from the clinic of Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health Department,
Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University after obtaining a written consent from their guardians
and clearance from the Ethical Committee. The children included in this study suffered
from bleeding on brushing and probing, change in color of gingiva due to inflammation and
no edema. They were randomly divided into two groups, group (A): forty eight children
used 0.125% chlorhexidine mouthwash and group (B): forty eight children used 2% neem
extract mouthwash.
Results: The results showed that the effect of Neem extract mouthwash and 0.125%
Chlorhexidine mouthwash on reducing gingival bleeding were statistically significant .
Besides, the results also showed that there was no a statistical significant difference (pvalue=1) between the two mouthwashes regarding their effects on gingival bleeding on
brushing.
Conclusion: Despite the limitation of our study, this study concluded that: Neem extract
mouthwash was effective in controlling gingival bleeding on brushing . Neem extract
mouthwash had a higher efficacy than Chlorhexidine mouthwash in decreasing sulcus
bleeding index scores in a group of Egyptian children . Neem extract mouthwash could be
very good cost-effective alternative to Chlorhexidine mouthwash with less side-effects
