Abstract

Background: Adolescent tibia vara is a cause for genu varum in young adults. The deformity is characterized by varus of the tibia, internal tibial torsion and a procurvatum deformity of the tibia. They usually have medial joint line pain and laxity in the lateral collateral ligament. Surgical correction of the deformities usually yields good results. The deformities can be corrected acutely or gradually.
Aim: To compare acute versus gradual correction of adolescent tibia vara using percutaneous osteotomy and ilizarov in terms of time to union and complications.
Methods: our study was a prospective randomized controlled study.
We divided our patients into two groups. Each group had 20 lower limbs.one group was acutely corrected by percutaneous tibial osteotomy and ilizarov frame. The other group had gradual correction of the varus deformity by percutaneous osteotomy and ilizarov group. Both groups were followed up for a year to detect complications, time to union, HSS knee score and accuracy of correction.
Results:The mean agewas 20.75 years in the acute group, and 21.5 years in the gradual group. There was improvement in the MAD, mMPTA, TFA in both groups. But there was no statistically significant difference between both groups.
