Abstract

obstructive sleep apnea is a highly prevalent disorder characterized by repeated reduction of airflow during sleep , it is known to be associated with obesity which place a mass load on the upper airway and increases its collapsibility , however OSA is presented in non-obese patients that has been explained in other studies by the presence of craniofacial abnormalities In this study we tried to draw a diagnostic profile for OSA in non-obese patients to determine it’s relation to other risk factors ,comorbid conditions, clinical and polysomnographic findings In this study 30 patients were included with BMI ˂ 30 , their anthropometric measures revealed no statistically significant association with AHI , prevelance of OSA in our group was high and equaled 80% History of recent wight gain , nasal allergy , drug intake were not significantly associated with AHI however history of smoking showed significant association with AHI hence smoking is a risk factor for OSA Epworth sleepiness scale were performed by asking the patient how often they fall asleep during various day activities , and it’s relation with AHI revealed no significant association Associatied comorbid conditions and it’s influence in the condition of the patients were studied and showed no significant association with AHI which means that comorbid diseases don’t have effect on OSA and it’s severity.
