Abstract

Epilepsy, one of the most common diseases in the brain, affects more than 70 million people worldwide. It is characterized by a long-lasting predisposition to spontaneous epileptic seizures and has many neurobiological, cognitive and psychosocial implications.
Cognition can be defined as the capacity of the brain to process information accurately and to program adaptive behavior. Cognition involves the ability to solve problems, to memorize information, or to focus attention
Mental slowness, memory loss and attention disturbances are the most frequently identified cognitive disorders in people; adults with epilepsy also complain of memory disorders. Seizure forms, EEG symptoms, age of onset, severity and chronicity of the condition, anatomical location and etiology are essential aspects of the concept of epileptic condition. Each of these parameters may have a specific impact on cognition.
This Case control study aimed to assess cognitive functions among patients with epilepsy (PWE) and probable related risk factors. This study conducted at psychiatry and neurology outpatient clinic, Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University.
A total sample of 106 participants were divided into two groups:
● Case group; Patients with generalized tonic clonic epilepsy, aged from 18 to 40 years, can read and write, have no chronic illness other than epilepsy .
