Abstract

Natural alternatives such as the inclusion of plant materials in fish feed formulation do not only have antimicrobial potential but also have been found to have other properties such as digestive stimulant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic that can benefit humans. These are attributed to the predominant polyphenol compounds and active components in the plant materials. The ability of medicinal plants/herbs to inhibit the activity of bacteria having potential interest as fish pathogens has been documented but there is little information on utilization of Psidium guajava and Mango (Mangifera indica L.) in mullet fish farming .Therefore , This study was accompanied cooperation between the Fish Nutrition laboratory, Aquaculture Department, Alexandria National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF), and Faculty of Agriculture Alexandria University, Egypt. These experiments were carried out in El-Max Station for Applied Aquatic Research, Alexandria Branch, and (NIOF). Two experiments were designed to investigate the effect of using different levels from Guava Psidium guajava and Mango Mangifera indica leaves meal and their extracts as dietary supplements on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition, immune related genes and health status of the mullet family fish.First Experiment The effect of using different levels of leaf meal and extracts of guava as a dietary supplementation on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition, immune related genes and health status of Liza armada. Seven isonitrogenous (25.12 % crude protein) were formulated to evaluate the effects of using different levels of Guava Psidium guajava leaves meal and their extracts (0.0, 1, 2 and 4%) at the same levels as dietary supplementation on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition, immune related genes and health status of the Liza armada fish, and the experiment lasted for 84days. The obtained results were as follows:<1- No significant differences were noticed for fish fed the experimental diets in final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, food conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio. 2- However, significant differences were recorded in energy utilization. Fish fed on D7 (4%GLE) recorded the highest values in FW, ADG, SGR, FCR and PER except PPV which the highest value was recorded by D5(1% GLE). 3-The survival rates were in the range of 96.67-100% for fish fed the experimental diets with no significant differences (P<0.05). However, no mortality was recorded in D 7 (4%GLE).
4- Significant differences were observed in body composition data between all treatments in terms of moisture content, crude protein, ether extract and ash. Crude protein content in fish was decreased in all treatments when comparing with control group. The highest value of ether extract content was observed in D7(4%GLE) . On the other hand, the highest value of ash was noticed in fish fed on D2 (1%GLM).
