Abstract

The development of urban areas is a discourse that has been on-going particularly in Federal Capital Territory - Abuja, Nigeria where different modern styles of architecture have emerged since its creation in the 1980s. This study has identified ways to integrate Hausa traditional architecture in the development of urban areas; Abuja by presenting largely, underlying potentials in terms of how architecture adopts to the various impacts of modernization. While researches on Hausa traditional architecture has been extensive, little has been done in the adoption in meeting the present needs of urban development. This study establishes the various features of (HTA) as factors responsible for the conservation of the Hausa culture and attributes. Ultimately, professionals such as architects, designers and government policies in Nigeria have abandoned traditional architecture in general while embracing foreign cultures in the execution of various infrastructural projects. To achieve the aim, some basic objectives were identified, as well as suitable methodological approaches were used. The literature review extensively discussed and analyzed the (HTA), its features, while considering the various design requirements, layouts and the dynamics of modern new trends in urban design systems alongside architectural theories that are applicable to traditional architecture. Relevant factors were obtained from robust literature; theoretical framework and a proposed conceptual framework were presented and analyzed. The study was limited to developments of urban areas; Abuja, with particular references made towards infrastructural projects carried out by architects, designers, developers within its catchment. The investigation was conducted through a well constructed questionnaire, interviews and responses from prominent Hausa architects, historians, developers as well as building occupants. In addition, this work identifies the “determinant” and “moderating” factors as major issues that contributed to the development of Hausa traditional architecture, in understanding of local materials, technique of construction, methods lay- out, social, cultural factors, and environmental factors amongst others. A physical observation on building sites and case studies was carried out. The study showed a significant impact of the (HTA) revealing possible emphasis on design requirements in the development of urban areas and concludes that even with the influence of modernization in terms of styles, building material, and methods of construction in current times, the professionals, designers and the researchers should have an awareness of the social- cultural and religious beliefs of client or user. Based on the analysis, it is recommended that, for functional architectural forms, efforts should be geared towards harmonizing the traditional and modern contemporary designs concepts. This study formulated policies suitable for the development of urban areas using traditional architecture, and this serves as a tool for further evaluation and policy making decisions for the development of urban areas especially in Northern Nigeria.
