Abstract

Purpose: The current study was conducted to evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on cancer pain in patients with solid metastatic tumors receiving palliative radiotherapy Methods: Thirty six patients from both genders (25 Women &11 Men) were included in this study. Their age range between 24 &72 years old. They were randomly divided into two equal groups. The study was conducted at the Department of Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine in Kasr El-Ainy Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. It was conducted from 1/3/2020 to 1/4/2021. Procedures:group (A) (Study group).Received the program of aerobic exercise using the bicycle ergometer (30 minute per session) 5 sessions per week for 2weeks in consequence with the palliative radiotherapy group (B) (control group).Received the palliative radiotherapy program only as group A.The pain level was measured by the Visual Analogue Scale and theblood Cortisol level. Results: Comparison between groups post treatment revealed a significant decrease in cortisol level and VAS of the study group compared with that of the control group. There was a significant decrease in both parameters post treatment compared with that pretreatment in the study group (p >0.001).The percent of decrease in cortisol level and VAS in the study group was28.98 and 22.65% respectively. There was moderate positive significant correlation (r = 0.68, p = 0.0001) between VAS and cortisol level. Conclusion: short term Moderate intensity aerobic exercise led to a significant reduction in cancer pain and blood cortisol (stress hormone) level in solid metastatic tumors patients receiving palliative radiotherapy
