Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the vertical bone gain after vertical ridge augmentation
using autogenous onlay ring blocks combined with guided bone regeneration covered by a collagen
membrane versus autogenous bone graft only covered by a titanium mesh in the posterior mandible.
Methodology: Twenty patients were included in this study. group A included 10 patients for
vertical augmentation using autogenous onlay ring blocks harvested from the mandibular symphysis
and combined with guided bone regeneration using a native collagen membrane. group B included
10 patients for vertical ridge augmentation using autogenous bone graft covered by a titanium mesh.
Radiographic assessment was done immediately and 6 months post operatively to assess the vertical
bone gain.
Results: After 6 months, study results showed comparable bone gain in both groups. However,
clinical quality of the augmented bone was not satisfactory. The mean bone gain for group A was
2.84±1.18mm and 4.22±1.35mm for titanium mesh group.
Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, both techniques, whether the use of autogenous ring
blocks combined with GBR or titanium mesh covering particulate graft are not predictable for vertical
bone augmentation in posterior mandible regarding bone quality and clinical complications.
