Abstract

Implants used for osteosynthesis restore bone stiffness temporarily
till the fracture union restores bones stiffness permanently. Orthopaedic
implants are artificial mechanical devices that must conform to certain
basic requirements like reliable function and minimal side effects.
Failure is one of the most important aspects of implant materials
behavior and directly influences the choice of materials and production
methods in manufacturing. The choice of a material influences rigidity,
corrosion characteristics, biocompatibility and tissue receptivity. The
surface morphology of the implant affects its stability within the
skeleton or within the surrounding cement mantle.
The main categories of materials presently used in orthopedic
implants are metals, polymers, ceramics, composite implants
(biodegradable polymers), and carbon fiber reinforced polysulfone.
Nearly all have been used for various surface morphologies.
