Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread form of arthritis in older people, and it is also one of the most common causes of physical disability. The current study aims to evaluate the effects of an educational intervention for elderly people on their knowledge and practice toward osteoarthritis. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was utilized to fulfill the aim of the study. A convenient sample of 55 elderly over three months of elderly people was recruited for the current study. The study was conducted in outpatient clinics at the rheumatology and rehabilitation clinic of Kasr Al-Aini Hospital. Three tools in the current study: a) the elderly’s sociodemographic and medical data questionnaire, b) patient knowledge questionnaire (PKQ), and c) osteoarthritis self-care scale. The current results revealed that, fifty-five OA elderly were included and fitted to the study. The mean PKQ -OA score was (15.48 ± 4.05) out of 30 in the pre-test assessment, and after the application of the educational intervention, there was an increase in the mean score of elderly knowledge (16.8± 4.1). Regarding self-care, there was an increase from (3.9±0.72) during the pretest assessment to (4±0.34) out of 6 after implementing the educational intervention. The study concluded that, the elderly with OA had average disease-related knowledge and perceived self-care ability, which improved after the educational intervention. The study recommended conducting training programs for elderly patients with OA to enhance their knowledge of the disease, which will result in better disease control
