Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of respiratory training in ventilatory functions in passive and non-passive cigarette smokers hemiplegic cerebral palsy and their function capacity. Thirty children diagnosed as hemiparetic cerebral palsy degree of spasticity ranged from 1 to +1 according to the modified ashworth scale spastic. Children participated in this study were selected according to their parents smoking behaviors as children of passive smokers and non passive smokers in age from four to eight years. Weight, height, ventilator functions (MVV, FVC, PIF, PEF)and six minutes walking test were detected for each children before and after 3months of starting treatment. Both groups were treated by incentive spirometer (IS) in addition to traditional physical therapy. The collected data was processed and statistically analysed using paired, unpaired test and Pearson correlation coefficient or Spreaman{u2019}s rank. the results showed statistically significant improvement in post treatment FVC, MVV, PIF, PEF, Functional capacity. but there was no correlation between ventilatory function and functional capacity. It is possible to conclude that incentive spirometer can be considerd an effective modality in improving ventilatory functions and functional capacity in passive and non-passive smoker hemiplegic cerebral palsied children
