Abstract
This study was conducted evaluate the role of leptin hormone in patients suffer from CKD whose underwent either regular hemodialysis or kidney transplantation. 80 patients were randomly selected ranged from 2 - 18 years. These children have been grouped into 3 categories: group 1 (hemodialysis), group 2 (underwent kidney transplantation) and group 3 (control healthy children). Each group underwent serial workup and investigations of serum electrolytes, kidney function tests and serum leptin level by (ElISA method). No statistically significance difference has been found in BMI, height and weight among the three groups while MAC and TSFT were markedly decrease in CKD groups (1 and 2). Beyond talking about electrolyte disturbances in CKD groups versus control one, the study found statistically significance (P < 0.05) change of serum leptin in control group versus CKD groups. There was statistically insignificant relationship between level of leptin and BMI. Leptina is part of intercalated pathophysiological processes. Using leptin as a nutritional outcome measure may be unnecessary, as anthropometric measurements are much more easily, cost effectively and feasible. Leptin cannot be regarded as an indicator of nutritional status of CKD patients, prognostic factor or outcome assessment tool for different measures of treatment of CKD
