Abstract

Passiflora incarnata along with several other plants belonging to the genus Passiflora have been reported as sedatives and for treatment or prevention of central disorders such as anxiety and insomnia. The medicinal use of few Passiflora species hasonlybeen scientifically well verified. There are over 400 species in the Passiflora genus world-wide, most of which have been little characterized in terms of phytochemical or pharmacological properties. Here, large scale multi-targeted metabolic profiling and fingerprinting techniques were utilized to help gain a broader insight into Passiflora species chemical composition. UV, MS and NMR spectra of extracted components were connected with NMR, MS, and multivariate analyses data from 17 species within the genus Passiflora and from different geographical origins. A total of 77 Metabolites were identified including 49C/O- flavonoids, 2 cyanogenic glycosides, and 19 fatty acid and 5 fatty acid amides. P. incarnata was found most enriched in C-flavonoids, which justify its use as official drug within the genus. Compared to NMR, LC{u2013}MS was found more effective techniques in sample classification based on genetic and or geographical origin as revealed from derived PCA and HCA analyses. This work also revealed for the potential anxiolytic activity of P. edulisethanol extract mediated viathe C-flavonoidsfound enriched in ethyl acetate and butanol subfractions
