Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the stress patterns induced in implants and bone surrounding implants in mandibular overdenture with three different diameters using three dimensional finite element analysis. Three different implant diameters were used. A computerized tomographic image was obtained. Three dimensional geometrical models were constructed using data from the computerized tomographic image into solid works program. The implants were virtually installed in the molar and canine region with diameter 2.8mm, 3.7 and 4.8mm. The material properties for each material were identified in the program. Vertical and oblique loads were applied for each model. The models were restrained at the inferior border to avoid total body displacement. All models were meshed and analyzed using a three dimensional finite element iterative solving method for stress analysis under vertical and oblique loading. The maximal Von Misses stresses were recorded and computed. The maximum stresses were recorded with 2.8 mm diameter (mini dental implant), while the least stresses were recorded with 4.8 mm diameter. These findings may be attributed to the different implant diameter. It was found that stresses had been increased due to the decrease in implant diameter. The stress values induced in the peri-implant bone due to the oblique load were greater than those induced by the vertical load
