Abstract

Background Urinary incontinence is a major health problem affecting female quality of life. Studying the prevalence, natural history, and potential risk factors of UI is of paramount importance in order to place more emphasis on primary health care and may help to target treatment resources and provide preventive steps in the future. Objectives Estimate the prevalence and predictors of urinary incontinence among middle- aged Egyptian females. Results A total of 375 women are included. The prevalence of urinary incontinence among our study subjects is 69.9%. Over weight, obesity, chronic constipation, history of recurrent urinary tract infection, prolonged intake of muscle relaxants were found to be significantly associated with any urinary incontinence, the prevalence of mixed, stress and urge type was 44.7% 36.6 %, 18.7% respectively. Postmenopausal state, diabetes mellitus, chronic chest problem, neuromuscular disorders, recurrent UTI, diuretic and muscle relaxants were found to be significant for mixed urinary incontinence. Frequent eating of sugary foods is significantly associated with stress urinary incontinence. The prevalence of sever incontinence is 26.4%. Significant relation was found between severity and low educational background, living in rural community. Post-menopausal state, frequent consumption of salty foods, high parity, diabetes mellitus, neuromuscular disorder, recurrent urinary tract infection, chronic constipation, also chronic intake of ACE and muscle relaxants appear to increase severity of UI. Only 16.4% of affected females seek medical consultation
