Abstract

A phytochemical and biological studies of Psidiumguajava L. and PsidiumcattleianumSabine cultivated in Egypt were carried out. Literature survey on several Psidiumspecies was reviewed. A detailed phytochemical study included a preliminary phytochemical screening, study of the volatile oil content, as well asinvestigation of steroidal, meroterpenoidal and flavonoid content. Psiguadial D, Ý-sitosterol, 4-hydroxy phenyl ethanoid palmitate ester, psidial C, corosolic acid and quercetin-3-O-Ü-L-arabinofuranoside were isolated from the chloroform:methanol extract(CME) of P. guajava leaves. While, cattleianal, cattleianone, mixture of Ü{u2013}amyrin and Ý-amyrin, ursolic acid, Ý-sitosterol-3-O-Ý-D-glucopyranoside, quercetin 3-O-Ý-D-arabinopyranoside and quercetin-3-O-Ý-D-xylopyranoside were isolated from P. cattleianumleaves. UPLC-PDA-ESI-qTOF-MSn was used to identify various chemical classes in the two Psidium species. Sixty-one peaks were characterized in the two plants. Identified metabolites included polyphenolics, flavonoid aglycones and glycosides, in addition to triterpenes and meroterpenoids. The total phenolic content of CME of P. cattlleianumleaves was higher than that estimated for P. guajava (162.17±7.6 and 69.76±6 mg GAE/g dried extract, respectively). While, the total flavonoid content estimated for the CME of P. guajava and P. cattleianum leaves was nearly the same (58.91±1.5 and 57.32±0.77 mg quercetin equivalent/g extract, respectively)
