Abstract

Steroidal compounds ranked among the most widely marketed products from the pharmaceutical industry. Nowadays steroids represent one of the largest sectors in pharmaceutical industry with world markets in the region of US $ 10 billion and the production exceeding 1,000 000 tons per year. Processes for production of 4 androstene 3, 17 dione (AD), 1, 4 androstadiene 3, 17 dione (ADD) and their derivatives from cheaper sterol substrates, such as cholesterol or sitosterol, have become considerably important with immense commercial possibilities. The aim of this work is the utilization of crude corn oil as a relatively cheap source of phytosterols for the production of pharmaceutically and commercially important steroids through bioconversion processes by locally isolated microorganisms. We have developed a process for production of 4 androstene 3, 17 dione (AD), Testosterone (T) and Boldenone (BOL) from corn oil as sole carbon source using a local isolate that obtained from extensive screening program and identified through 16S DNA analysis as pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Response surface modelling (RSM) statistical optimization used to determine the optimum condition for maximum production of (BOL). The effect of three factors (pH, (NH4)₂SO₄ and KH₂PO₄) level on the yields of (BOL) was examined using Box Behnken design. The results indicated that the pH value of the medium significantly affect the production of (BOL), while the concentration of (NH4)₂SO₄ and KH₂PO₄ affected the yield to a lesser extent
