Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most frequent chronic diseases of childhood. Its management in children should include regular assessment, careful monitoring of glycemic control and educational training on disease management. Is to evaluate the effectiveness of the current educational interventions for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes applied at the diabetes endocrine metabolic pediatric unit (DEMPU), children’s hospital, Cairo university. The present study was an observational cohort study conducted on 100 cases of T1D at DEMPU, Cairo University from period January 2013 to July 2014. Using a questionnaire that covered all aspects of the programme solved before and after attending one to one educational intervention session. There is significant increase in the total score of diabetic knowledge questionnaire with p value {u227B} 0.05 after attending education program and there is defect in CHO counting before and after the intervention (p value {u227B} 0.05). This study shows improvement in the height and weight SDS of the age group less than 5 years with p value 0.049 and 0.035. There is significant decline in the number of patients who developed (acute complications) severe hypoglycemia and DKA with p value 0.039 and 0.048 but there is no improvement in the metabolic control (HA1c %) p value = 0.21. There is improvement in gaining knowledge after attending the education program but there is defect in CHO counting. There is improvement in the anthropometric data of the age group {u227B} 5 years. There is significant decline in the patients who developed acute complications
