المستخلص Sustainability has become an ultimate requirement for civil engineering projects, including infrastructure projects. This research introduces a systems model for evaluating sustainability of infrastructure projects. The model captures the environmental system, the infrastructure product, and the construction process as interacting systems that fundamentally exchange matter, energy and information. System flows are captured to evaluate their environmental impacts. The model is developed using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) in a general case, then applied to water pipeline projects as an example of infrastructure projects, covering the water pipeline as an infrastructure product, and the three construction techniques of open cut trenching, microtunneling, and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). A detailed case study of the New Cairo water pipeline project is provided |
