Abstract

The aim of this work was to compare and investigate the effect of (He - Ne) laser and (NB - UVB) in treatment of patients with segmental vitiligo. Thirty patients were assigned randomly into two groups of equal numbers; their ages ranged from 20 - 45 years. The (He - Ne) laser group(group A) received helium neon laser irradiation in addition to routine medical treatment(topical corticosteroid) which was dexamethasone. The (NB - UVB) group (group B) received NB - UVB (311 nm) in addition routine medical treatment (topical corticosteroid) which was dexamethasone. The two study groups received 3 sessions per week for 3 successive months. The data were collected before and after the treatment for both groups. Evaluation procedures were carried out to evaluate the repigmentation by VASI and depigmentation percentage (role of nine). Post treatment both groups showed a variant improvement in repigmentation, but a significant improvement difference was recorded between the two groups in favor of the (He-Ne)group. Percentage of changes of depigmentation percentages (%) and VASI in the (He - Ne) laser group was 43.45% and 47.67% respectively, while it was 38.67% and 36.84% respectively in the (NB - UVB) group. Helium neon laser and narrow band ultraviolet B were considered to be an effective modality for improving the repigmentation in subjects suffering from segmental vitiligo but helium neon laser effective, safe and economic more than narrow band ultraviolet B
