Abstract

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (M/SMEs) are a dynamic force for sustained economic growth, as well as an engine for job creation. Moreover, microfinance is considered an integral tool in order to support M/SMEs in fulfilling their role in economic development. However, access to finance is often identified as one of the largest constraints facing small firms. M/SMEs in developing countries are more disadvantaged at obtaining external finance, compared to M/SMEs in developed countries. Therefore, an empirical investigation has been conducted in order to measure the impact of access to finance on M/SMEs{u2019} growth through multiple regression models. This study employs an empirical approach in an attempt to answer the proposed research question. The results revealed that firm/owner{u2019}s gender and age, as well as financial characteristics equally affect small and micro firms{u2019} growth. Hence, access to finance remains a key constraint to M/SMEs{u2019} growth, and as such, safeguarding financial inclusion must be viewed as a core strategic policy objective for all countries, particularly developing nations
