Abstract

Nanocomposite films from chitosan biopolymer (CS) and montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) at various concentration of (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 15% wt% MMT) were prepared by using both sonication and casting technique. The study of addition MMT nanoparticles at different contents in the composites showed that: The formation of an intercalated structure as exfoliated and flocculated patterns as indicated by the analysis of X-ray diffraction. FTIR indicated the complexation between chitosan and nanoclay due to the changes of characterization frequency and the electrostatic interaction between cationic of chitosan and anionic of MMT confirming the x-ray analysis. UV-visible spectra clarified that the allowed indirect transition was the most probable type transition. The optical energy gap decrease with increasing the content of MMT while the refractive index show the opposite behavior. The oscillator parameters were calculating using the oscillator model. TGA data showed that the thermal stability increases with increasing the MMT contents in composite samples. The thermodynamics parameters were calculated using Coats-Redfern model. The adsorption process of manganese ions from groundwater followed Langmuir isotherm model and the kinetic isotherm Pseudo-second-order mode was preferable.
